Background: Reggie Virgil was recruited as a 3-star athlete in the class of 2022 out of Apopka, Florida. Virgil was ranked as a top 250 player in Florida and top 150 athlete in the class. Virgil played wide receiver and defensive back for Mount Dora Christian Academy. As a senior, Virgil was a first team all-state selection. After his high school career, he committed to play for Miami (OH) over Eastern Kentucky.
College: As a freshman and sophomore for Miami (OH), Virgil spent the majority of his time on special teams. He enjoyed a breakout 2024 campaign as a junior. He was a Second Team All-MAC selection after recording 41 receptions for 816 yards and 9 touchdowns on the year. Ahead of his senior season, Reggie transferred to play in the Power 4 for Texas Tech. In his one season with the Red Raiders, he was an All-Big 12 honorable mention selection after tallying 57 receptions for 705 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Strengths: Virgil is a high-level route runner with plenty of nuance in each level of the field. He gets in and out of his breaks smoothly, sinking his hips and avoiding choppy feet before he cuts. Virgil can create separation in tight spaces with excellent footwork and change of direction ability. He seems to come to a screeching halt on a dime. In the deep areas of the field, Virgil does well to track the football over his shoulder. He displays late hands and a smooth process throughout the catch. His length provides for a large catch radius. He combines that catch radius with soft hands to create a friendly target for the quarterback.
Weaknesses: Virgil struggles to break down press coverage against stronger and more physical cornerbacks. When it comes to a battle of muscle, Virgil loses his physical advantages. He tends to get knocked off his route by jams at the line of scrimmage. As a run blocker, Virgil is not effective. He tends to open up the inside of his frame to let cornerbacks pass through to the edge.
Conclusion: Reggie Virgil is a large frame with reliable hands to make difficult catches in tight windows. He is a savvy route runner who can create separation in all three areas of the field. He could afford to get stronger to win more consistently and as a run blocker.
