School: Oregon
Class: Redshirt Senior
Position: OT
HT: 6’6
WT: 327 lbs
Background: Alex Harkey is a JUCO product out of Austin, Texas. Harkey attended Hays High School, where he played tight end and defensive line. As a senior, he had limited production with only 6 receptions. He also played basketball for Hays.
College: Harkey attended Tyler Junior College in 2021. He played his first 4 games as a tight end for Tyler before transitioning to the offensive line. After one year at Tyler, Harkey transferred to Colorado, where he was primarily used as a reserve. He then transferred again to Texas State, where he was a reserve offensive tackle in 2023 before taking over starting duties in 2024. In his first season as a starter, Harkey was a Third Team All-Sun Belt selection after playing a majority of his snaps at right tackle. After a successful campaign with Texas State, Harkey transferred to Oregon for his final year of eligibility. In his one season with the Ducks, Harkey was an All-Big 10 honorable mention after starting every game at right tackle.
Strengths: Alex Harkey is a violent offensive lineman that plays with a high level of nastiness on each rep. He has strong hands that land with force. He is built heavily, possessing a dense frame at the tackle position. He drives defenders back by getting low and firing into their pads like a cannon. Harkey is comfortable with letting defenders lunge towards him before he gets over them, pinning the defender to the ground. His legs never stop moving; he pushes piles forward with motor and strength.
Weaknesses: Harkey’s block sustainability in pass protection is not where it needs to be. If he doesn’t finish an assignment into the dirt, he loses grip and gives up leverage. While he plays with a mean streak, he often takes it too far. His temperament runs hot and he can take some brainless penalties. His lateral quickness is lacking; if he gets beat on the initial step, he does not have the recovery speed to get back into the rep.
Conclusion: Alex Harkey is a violent offensive tackle with plenty of strength to assert his dominance on any given play. His violence can get out of hand and he is a heavily penalized player. Due to his lack of recovery ability, he could be a candidate to kick inside to guard.
