School: Illinois

Class: Redshirt Senior

Position: QB

HT: 6’2

WT: 205 lbs

Background: Luke Altmyer was a 4-star quarterback out of Starkville, Mississippi. Altmyer was a top 5 player in the state and a top 25 quarterback in the 2021 class. Altmyer was an all-state selection as both a junior and a senior for Starkville High School. Luke was an Elite 11 finalist and was named an Under Armour All-American. Altmyer chose to stay home and play for Ole Miss over schools such as Florida State, Alabama, and Georgia Tech.

College: Altmyer was the backup quarterback for Ole Miss in 2021 and 2022, appearing in a total of 9 games during his time there. Ahead of the 2023 season, Luke transferred to Illinois. He immediately took over as the starter for the Illini that season, throwing for 1,883 yards and 13 touchdowns. Luke had his breakout campaign in 2024. He passed for 2,717 yards and 22 touchdowns on his way to an All-Big 10 honorable mention selection. That was a year in which Altmyer was also an All-Academic selection. In 2025, Altmyer was once again named an All-Big 10 honorable mention selection with 3,007 yards and 22 touchdowns on the season.

Strengths: Luke Altmyer is a headsy quarterback who can read defenses and progress through his reads quickly. He consistently finds the open man no matter what progression they are. His quick release allows him to take more time to scan the field. That quick release also generates significant velocity on his throws. He delivers the ball like a laser anywhere on the field. He excels with timing routes, knowing exactly when to release the football and delivering it in the perfect spot for his receiver. Altmyer makes it so difficult for the pass rush to get home with how quickly he gets the football out. He has one of the quickest times to throw in the country. His most effective throw on the field is between 10-20 yards, hitting receivers in stride and leading them into yards after catch opportunities.

Weaknesses: Altmyer does not have a great feel for the pocket around him. His quick release and processing abilities prevent a lot of pressure, but when he takes even a fraction of a second longer, he loses feel of what is going on around him. He has a limited athletic profile; he can abandon the pocket when necessary, but he is not going to gash defenses doing so. Altmyer does not possess the ideal frame that you look for in a quarterback at the next level. He is slightly lean for what most are comfortable with at the next level.

Conclusion: Luke Altmyer can be a game manager at the next level, coming in and avoiding any game-changing errors. However, he is not going to significantly raise an offense’s ceiling. His limited athleticism will make it easier for defenses to key in on him and create for a more one dimensional player.
