The Green Bay Packers have the youngest roster in the NFL by average age,but that has been no excuse to not be a competitive team. Despite coming into another year as the youngest team, they hope to take that next step as a true super bowl contender. They will need some young players, specifically on offense, to take that leap to stardom.
Departures: The Packers did not part ways with too much talent from the 2024 season. Te list of players in this category is relatively short compared to most of the NFL. RB AJ Dillon, OT Andre Dillard, C Josh Myers, CB Jaire Alexander, CB Eric Stokes, and DT TJ Slaton all found new homes. Obviously, in terms of reputation, Jaire Alexander is a huge loss. However, Alexander cannot manage to stay healthy and has played in 7 or fewer games in 3 of the last 4 seasons.
Additions: The Packers did not bring in a load of free agents, but the players they did sign will be serious contributors. The team signed IOL Aaron Banks and Nate Hobbs to 4-year contracts while signing LB Isaiah Simmons to a 1-year contract. Simmons’ role with the team has yet to be carved out but I look for him to find himself and his potential in Green Bay. Hobbs and Banks will both be starters immediately for the team and raise their respective units.
Draft Selections: In the draft, the Packers went with quite a surprise, selecting Texas WR Matthew Golden in the 1st round. This makes a team who already has 4 average to above average wide receivers now have a crowded group with 5. In the 2nd round they took NC State OT Anthony Belton. Belton will take some time to develop and I do not see him starting for at least a season or 2. Other notable picks include TCU WR Savion Williams, Texas EDGE Barryn Sorrell, and Oklahoma State EDGE Collin Oliver.
The team does well to draft talented players. I am slightly concerned that they didn’t go after holes in their roster in the draft and it might lead to some problems in the season, but if they are convinced on these players’ trajectory, then there is no doubt they made the right picks. In a tough division and a season carrying certain expectations, it is paramount that this young roster handle the big moments and weight of the pressure well.
Season Predictions: The Packers start the season at home against the Lions and at home against the Commanders on Thursday Night Football. They are on the road for weeks 3 and 4 against the Browns and Cowboys. I have the Packers starting the season 2-2.
Green Bay has an early bye in Week 5 before hosting the Bengals and back-to-back road games against the Cardinals and Steelers. The Packers will go 2-1 in this stretch.
The Packers host the Panthers for a Week 9 afternoon game before hosting the Eagles on Monday Night Football. They then travel to New Jersey to face the Giants, host the Vikings, and finish the month in Detroit against the Lions on Thanksgiving. The Packers go 3-2 in November.
December starts at home against the Bears before traveling to take on the Broncos, playing the Bears in Chicago, host the Ravens, and finish the season on the road against the Vikings. The Packers go 2-3 in the final stretch of the season.
Final Thoughts: I have the Green Bay Packers finishing the season with a record of 9-8. This may not be what the team or fans are looking for based on their progression over the last few seasons, but they have a tough schedule in a tough division. 9-8 and missing the playoffs may be enough for the front office to finally step up and go acquire a big time WR1 in the offseason.
