Background: John Michael Gyllenborg was a 3-star tight end in the 2021 class out of Leawood, Kansas. Gyllenborg was born in Kansas, but played for Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a top 30 player in Missouri and on the cusp of being a top 100 tight end in his class. He only started playing football as a senior at Rockhurst. He was an All-Academic selection off the field that season as well. Gyllenborg was also one of the best basketball players in the state. He was an all-district selection in basketball as a junior. John Michael Gyllenborg chose to play for Wyoming over Columbia.
College: Gyllenborg redshirted in his first year with the Cowboys and was strictly a reserve and special teams contributor in 2022 as a redshirt freshman. As a redshirt sophomore in 2023, he appeared in every game and started in 4. He recorded 23 receptions for 360 yards and 3 touchdowns that season. John Michael dealt with an injury at the beginning of the season. In 9 games, he had 30 receptions for 425 yards on his way to Second Team All-Mountain West. He was limited again in 2025 after only appearing in 9 games. He recorded 24 receptions for 217 yards and a touchdown.
Strengths: John Michael Gyllenborg is an elite pass catching tight end who can work both in the slot and on the line of scrimmage. He is an athletic freak who is expected to run one of the top 40-yard dashes at the position. He has the long speed to attack the seams vertically and take the top off the defense. He can also create separation in tight areas with excellent quickness and sharp route running. He wins in a variety of way, showing his football IQ at the stem of his routes, where he exposes soft spots in the defense. He does well to not chop his feet at the top of his routes, keeping the defender guessing. Not only is he athletic, but he possesses the ideal frame for a tight end.
Weaknesses: Gyllenborg struggles with size and physicality throughout his routes. Longer and stronger safeties tend to give him trouble, knocking him off his routes. He needs to use his frame more effectively to get yards after contact as he is too easy to bring down in the open field. As a blocker, Gyllenborg leaves a lot to be desired. He has the size, but his upper body fundamentals are lacking. His punches miss far too often, leaving himself open to getting beat.
Conclusion: John Michael Gyllenborg has all of the measurables and elite athleticism that should translate well to the NFL. His injury history and lack of production in 2025 is concerning, but Gyllenborg is someone who has the traits an NFL team will be willing to bet on.
