Darian Mensah Scouting Report

Background: Darian Mensah was barely even ranked as a 2-star QB in the class of 2023. Mensah was not a top 125 QB or top 2,000 player nationally in his class. Mensah was the league player of the year as a senior at Saint Joseph High School in San Luis Obispo, CA. Mensah comes from an athletic family as he has a twin sister, Grace, who plays soccer for Oregon. Mensah committed to play for Tulane out of high school.

College: As a true freshman, he took over the starting role midseason. Mensah accumulated a total of 13 starts as a member of the Green Wave, Mensah passed for 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns. After those two full years at Tulane, Mensah turned his solid play into a hefty NIL deal with Duke. Mensah helped lead Duke to an ACC Championship and was a Second Team All-ACC after posting 3,973 and 34 touchdowns to go along with only 6 interceptions. After one season at Duke, Mensah transferred again, this time to Miami.

Strengths: Darian Mensah is a consistently accurate quarterback who can deliver the ball perfectly in tight windows. His accuracy does not drop off when attempting those deeper throws as he is able to drop the ball in a bucket. His football travels with a high velocity and stays on a straight rope to zip past defenders in the short to intermediate areas of the field. His upper body works in sync with his feet, giving him sound mechanics and an ideal throwing motion. Mensah is most dangerous when he is asked to improvise or roll out and make a throw on the run. His ability to extend plays with his legs often gives receivers enough time to work open and stress defenses vertically. Despite not relying on his ability to scramble, he can still make defenses pay with his legs if they do not account for it.

Weaknesses: His velocity takes a steady tumble when trying to make that throw 20+ yards down the field. His accuracy remains, but the hang time on the football gives defensive backs time to get their head turned around. He also tends to underthrow receivers on deep shots, limiting what ground the defense has to cover in long yardage situations. His arm strength leaves plenty to be desired.

Conclusion: Darian Mensah is a quarterback with an incredibly high IQ who has access to most throws on the football field. His arm strength is not where it needs to be, but he makes up for it with a high football IQ and the athleticism to stretch plays.
